Math Placement Eligibility Score Tables

Student studying

Depending on one’s major and prior preparation, a student may need to take a math placement exam to place into their desired math course.Ìý To determine if you need to take a placement exam, follow these steps:
Ìý

  • Step 1: Determine the introductory math course for your major.Ìý

    • These can be found in the under the Requirements and Degree Program Guides for the major.Ìý You can also reach out to your academic advisor.Ìý
  • Step 2: Determine if you place into the desired math course.Ìý
    • If your major requires a math course other than Math 101M, you will need to place into the course either through your High School GPA, SAT or ACT math score, or an Â鶹¹ú²úAV administered placement exam.Ìý The table below shows placement based on these scores.Ìý Alternatively, a student may take a lower-level math course as a prerequisite course.Ìý For example, a major may list Precalculus I (Math 162M) as the first math course in the Degree Program Guide.Ìý If a student does not qualify for Math 162M, but they do qualify for Math 103M, they may take Math 103M as their first math course.Ìý Doing this, however, may extend the time to degree and/or delay entry into some coursework in the major.
  • Step 3:ÌýIf you do not place into the desired math course and wish to improve your placement, you should complete the ALEKS placement program.

*Placement into Math 103M for students with a high school GPA less than 3.40 is only available through ALEKS.

**Accuplacer is an alternative placement exam that can only be used for placement into Math 162M and above. However, it does not provide the opportunity to practice and review material to improve one’s score. ALEKS is the preferred placement program.
